March 1999 DOE 2000 PI Meeting

Meeting Description and information

The goal of this meeting is to plan future directions for DOE 2000 activities. We want to identify more opportunities to establish cross-fertilization of ideas among various PIs, with an emphasis on more interaction between ACTS and Collaboratories. We want all attendees to contribute to answering three specific questions, through breakout group discussions and presentations. The three questions are:

(A) Assume the entire DOE 2K program, initially planned for 3 years of work (ending in FY 00) becomes part of the MICS "base budget" in 01. What do you see as the highest priorities for future activities within this budget to continue the significant advances made by the program to date? Focus on evolution -- what activities are coming to a successful close and what activities need to begin? To keep the discussion interesting, no one should be allowed to advocate extensions to their own program.

(B) Assume SSI comes into being, with $ XX M devoted to software infrastructure support. This would be work beyond the scope of supporting specific SSI projects, but possibly patterned after the way Collaboratories R&D supports Collaboratories Testbeds. What are the most important topics areas that we need to include, above and beyond the expected resources and activities covered under Question A?

(C) SSI needs to coordinate relevant activities with other related work funded by other agencies, including primarily, NSF, DOD, and NASA. What key technical work do you see (funded by these agencies) that would best complement the plans identified in A and B? What are the best organizational mechanisms we can use to produce technically sound results from getting the key groups to collaborate?

Meeting Agenda

The agenda for the meeting will be structured as follows. Day 1 will be devoted to giving attendees background to help understand the questions and the context in which they are being asked. Day 2 will divide attendees in to 6 breakout groups to discuss these questions. We are going to ask people to participate in a specific breakout group so we have a good mix of all parts of DOE 2000 activities in each group. Day 3 will be spent by the breakout groups in preparing and giving presentations on their answers to the questions.
